Battle of the Worlds Rating : Posted by : joemol on Thu, 7 Aug 2008 09:05:56 -0400 This is another 1960's Anglo-European science fiction potboiler with a ridiculous plot and even more ridiculous acting and dialogue. The dubbed soundtrack adds an irritating dimension to an already irritating score. The actors move and speak as though they were marionettes from the late lamented TV series The Thunderbirds and one is almost tempted to look for the strings which move them. The highlight is the veteran actor Claude Rains camping it up as usual. I have never liked Rains much. He has minced his way through far too many characters, from Prince John in Robin Hood to Napoleon III in Juarez, with the same squeaky performance we see here. Nonetheless his cranky impersonation of a very oddball professor is indeed the highlight. Doesn't say much for the rest of the movie I'm afraid.
Assignment Outer Space Rating : Posted by : joemol on Tue, 5 Aug 2008 17:45:07 -0400 The most striking thing about this movie is that it is unbelievably ugly! The actors are ugly, the sets are ugly, the washed out, contrasty photography is ugly and everything else seen in the film is ugly. It doesn't get any better when it gets to the dialogue, which is mostly a collection of wisecracks strung together in semi-random order. Unfortunately the film-makers' operate under the delusion that their masterly script is witty and humorous so I hasten to assure the reader that it is neither. One gets used to the nonsense peddled as advanced science and technology in cheap sci-fi movies but this gem outdoes most of them. The first ten minutes of the film have enough howlers to keep anyone with even a modest scientific knack in laughs for the rest of the movie. All in all, this is a fairly typical example of the cheap Euro-English genre of science fiction made by job lots in the 60's. Enjoy!

It is an unpretentious little tale, with 1950s middle class values but it somehow rises above these. The actors are both likeable and believable and make their characters come alive. Dorothy Malone's strong female lead is a great attraction. She manages to be both feminine and compelling and you can't help but like her. John Ireland is a favourite of mine and again he does not disappoint. If you like “small” movies with fast action and to-the-point acting than you will like this.
Invisible Ghost Rating : Posted by : joemol on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 02:03:06 -0400 This movie "stars" Lugosi Béla. That's all you need to know. Ah! One more thing. Half a bottle of good scotch or brandy, drunk preferably just before you see this movie, may help you through it.
